Slow Down Move Over
#SlowDownMoveOver.
A tow truck driver is killed by a moving vehicle every six days. That’s the daily reality of working in this field that most people probably don’t think about.
Imagine having to go to work every day while cars are passing you at over 50 miles per hour while you’re trying to do your job.
This is the reality that tow truck drivers and other first responders experience on a daily basis.
We believe with the right information, we can all do our part to change these unfortunate statistics.
When you see emergency vehicles with flashing lights stopped on the side of the road you should always slow down as quickly as possible. Once it’s safe, move over a lane to give them adequate space.
Keeping the Community Safe - It's The Law
It’s the law, and this simple act could mean the difference between life and death for the tow truck driver, first responders and any motorists involved in the emergency or helping. Everyone should be able to get back home to their loved ones safely.
Penalties for violating the Florida Move Over Law are based on the severity of the violation. Although it’s a noncriminal traffic infraction, it will add three points to your driving record plus the fine, which is a minimum of $120 according to the Florida Highway Safety And Motor Vehicles.
Why Do Drivers Ignore the #SlowDownMoveOver Law?
Whether it’s distracted driving, ignorance of the laws or being unaware of the true dangers involved, Cape Coral Towing & Recovery is committed to raising awareness on this important issue.
“Moving over and slowing down for emergency and service vehicles is law in Florida; but by doing so, drivers are also displaying a nod of support to the men and women who call the road their office,” said FLHSMV Executive Director, Terry L. Rhodes.
“Crashes that occur because of a driver that failed to move over are completely preventable; they take our officers and members of our communities away from their families, who gave freely to make Florida a safer place to live and travel.
As you head to your destinations this year, remember these four words if you see flashing lights: slow down, move over.”
